2018 Conference Education Program/Handouts

Since the dawn of IIMC, the pursuit of new knowledge has been a global activity fueled by human curiosity and enabled by professional development and communication networks that now span across the entire globe.

The forty-four Municipal Clerks that assembled in French Lick, Indiana in 1947 for the first meeting of the National Institute of Municipal Clerks, understood the most important aspect of networking – the human factor. These Clerks, led by John J. Coffey, built relationships based on trust, mutual respect, intrinsic curiosity and a spirit of mutual assistance. In presiding over NIMC’s first meeting, Coffey addressed a goal shared by all of those present.

“We want an organization that will, through annual and other meetings, bring us together and keep us together in a spirit of mutual assistance and honest good-fellowship. The importance of the office merits a real organization.”

Little did they know that 72 years later, their vision would evolve into the globally recognized, internationally respected association that is now known as the 15,000-member strong, International Institute of Municipal Clerks.

The naval phrase “ALL Hands on Deck...Global Networking for Shared Success” is rightfully the theme for the 2018 IIMC Annual Conference and neatly sums up the desire of Clerks around the world to foster that spirit of good fellowship and unite to keep ships afloat on these rough seas upon which we sail.

Throughout this education program you will submerge yourself in themes of courage, collaboration and communication. The more you teach, share and listen, the more you will learn. In Norfolk, IIMC encourages you to take an “ALL Hands on Deck” approach and stop taking on water! Lean on your colleagues, make those connections, leave no Clerk behind, and never forget that it was the human network that powered the pursuit of new knowledge and built IIMC into what it is today.

In 2018, IIMC will be offering 6 MMC Academy Sessions, 4 Athenian Leadership Dialogues, 2 General Sessions and 42 Concurrent Education Sessions to satiate your desire for professional development.

IIMC looks forward to welcoming you to Norfolk, Virginia!
