President’s Message - February 2017
Posted on May 5, 2017 at 10:00 AM by Denice Cox
January is usually a hectic time for us with Reorganization meetings and all that is involved with the beginning of a new year. When looking at my January calendar this year, I realized that I was going to have the opportunity to attend the 2017 IIMC Region II Conference as IIMC President. This was special for me because the Clerks from my “home” region have always been supportive of my desire to serve IIMC and our members in a leadership position.
This year’s conference was held at the majestic Oglebay Resort and Spa in Wheeling, West Virginia from January 10-13, 2017. The West Virginia Clerks and Recorders Association had not hosted a Region II conference for many years. It had been so long, one of their members went so far as to say to the attendees that “West Virginia has not been very active with IIMC and the Region over the past few years but we are back and we are here to stay!” I cannot tell you how awesome that sounded to the sixty plus members of our Region who attended the conference. Now, this resurgence didn’t happen overnight or without the tremendous effort of so many. Much of the credit goes to past Region II Director Kimberley Rau, MMC from Laurel, Maryland, who worked with the leaders of the West Virginia Association to make this happen. Thank you so much, Kim!
The conference began with an Athenian Dialogue lead by IIMC’s-own Past President, Chuck Tokar, MMC. Chuck, with help from his capable assistant Denise Ridley, MMC, lead us through an enlightening discussion about Walt Disney: An American Original. Those who were fortunate enough to participate in this session came away with many leadership tips that will help make us better leaders. Thank you Chuck and Denise. The educational program over the next two and a half days were great and included topics such as: Benefits of a Positive Attitude, Surviving an “Active Shooter,” Business Writing Tips and “Leadership from the Inside Out” facilitated by IIMC’s Director of Professional Development, Dr. Jane Long. Each session gave those in attendance many tools to try in our own office. I cannot be more proud of all involved with this great conference. Many in attendance mentioned to our colleagues from West Virginia that they put on such a great conference, we were just going to come back next year and let them do it again!
This amazing four-day event would not have been as spectacular without a tremendous group of West Virginia Clerks who dove head-first and made us all feel special. This group included: Andrea Kerr, Janice Jones, MMC; Jane Rickman, West Virginia State President Damita Johnson, CMC; Kim Benson, CMC; Tom Armstead, MMC; Janet Keller and Annette Wright, CMC. THANK YOU ALL.
Over the past months, I, along with IIMC Past President Monica Martinez Simmons, MMC, have been working with IIMC‘s Executive Director Chris Shalby, Director of Professional Development Dr. Jane Long and University of LaVerne Professor Dr. Kathy Duncan to create IIMC’s first-ever Diversity/Inclusion Task Force. After the initial Call to Action, we have been working to finalize the membership of this important task force. The task force’s mission will be to examine our organization to ensure that IIMC is doing its best at being inclusive and transparent in providing opportunities for all members to have a voice within our Organization. On behalf of all involved, it gives me great pleasure to announce that the members of IIMC’s Diversity/Inclusion Task Force are:
Region I Amy E. Warfield, CMC Burlington, MA

Region II Tanya B. Harding County of Henrico, VA
